At the beginning of every year, I always make like 20 (okay, I kid, only about 4) resolutions for that year, expectations that would hopefully be achieved, though others will be completely forgotten by the next day. But when the end of the year rolls around, the reflecting begins: what could I have done better?, how have I changed?, what were the biggest surprises? 2010, I must admit, was a crazy year for me: full of friends, family, moving and as of recent: lots and lots of chocolate (it's true, the Swiss do chocolate best). But how would one sum up the greatness of a year; the effect that year had on your life?
I will not lie, but 2009 is rather forgettable now. Yes, I had my first boyfriend and one of my best friends moved, yet the enormity of adventures that would happen in 2010 would just overwhelm the events of the previous year. Lets be frank: Prince William and Kate are getting married. 3 of the 4 woman in my family were (and still are) absolutely crushed by the news (My mother, on the other hand, has already declared that she found her Prince William many years ago when she met my father). The World Cup took place, and Spain took the title, proving that they had a pretty amazing year in football. There was a total lunar eclipse on the winter solstice, the previous one having been in the 1600s. I mean yes, 2009, you did give the 2016 Olympics to Rio de Janiero, and I will forever be grateful, but really? The World Cup beats that by a thousand miles (until 2016 rolls around, then it will be a different story).
Personally, I had a rather interesting year. Just at the beginning, I learnt I was moving "across the pond" to Switzerland. My team won at Cheerleading State and I learnt the importance of baking brownies and the greatness it has on rejuvenating the soul (unless you burn the brownies, then it's just a pain). I met new people, went to new places and began to understand what adapting really is. And somewhere in the middle of all that I got my wisdom teeth removed. But how can I say that 2010 was much better then the earlier years?
You can measure the year in the great times you had: the times that made you smile; the times where you laughed so hard that you began to cry; the times where you felt at rest. But are there more efficient ways to calculate it's greatness? Maybe by the number of times you saw Inception (4), the hours spent at coffee shops chatting the day away (approx. 60), the amount of chocolate bars eaten (too many to count).
Or could it be the way the year has changed your view on life. The times when empathy over took you; where you humbled your self for the general wellness of others; when you fought even though you "were licked before you even started" (To Kill A Mockingbird); where you had only the simplest things in life, yet felt so alive and free; when you learnt that everything that is here today may not always be there tomorrow, no matter how many promises are made. The world changes with each passing 365 days, adapting, molding to a new generation of thinkers, lovers and doers. Knowing that you are now changed for the better (or at least changed), the amounts of times you cried, you felt fear, you needed a hug suddenly become worth it in your new found strength. Your character grew; You found your footing.
So how would you say 2010 was? It gets a big fat YAY from my point of view.
The movie Rent sums it all up: how do you measure a year?
